Connie’s husband, Clifford, an aristocratic industrialist, owns coalmines and a large family estate, is paralyzed from the waist down by a war wound, is confined to a wheelchair, and is estranged from his wife who is slowly drawn into association with the gamekeeper.Their passionate contacts finally developed into genuine love. There is also the perverse, maternal relationship that ultimately develops between Clifford and Mrs. Bolton, his caring nurse, after Connie has left, she simultaneously adores and despises him, while Clifford depends and look down upon her, is the most complex relationship in the novel.
